MSTCM James R Wood

Master Chief Wood began his career in the Coast Guard Reserve in 1998 between his junior andPhoto Image Master Chief James R.Wood senior year in high school.  After basic training he was assigned as a seaman apprentice at MSD Baton Rouge.  There served in various marine safety roles including foreign vessel boardings, pollution response and facility inspections.  After the September 11, 2001 attacks, Master Chief Wood was recalled to active duty three times for homeland security missions, military out load operations, and PWCS missions.  In August of 2005, he was a part of a rescue team for the initial response to New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina.  Following the response he returned to selected reserve status at MSU Baton Rouge. Master Chief Wood served as the reserve PWCS section leader and was an intricate part of MSU Baton Rouge being selected as the 2009 RADM Bennet "Bud" Sparks Award recipient.  In 2010 he was selected for the newly created position of Senior Enlisted Reserve Advisor (SERA) at CG STA New Orleans. There he helped develop a more integrated active duty and reserve crew which led to STA New Orleans being selected as the 2013 RADM Bennet "Bud" Sparks Award recipient.  Following his tour at the station he screened and was selected for Command Silver Badge and requested to serve at PSU 308.   


As a civilian he serves as a Fire Chief of Fire Protection District No. 1 in West Feliciana Parish, Louisiana. He is involved in many other aspects of public safety including serving as a USAR team member, former SWAT team member and member of various commissions and tasks forces.


He holds a Master’s Degree in Emergency Management, Bachelors in Fire Administration and Prevention Technology and an Associates in Fire Science. He is a graduate of the National Fire Academy Executive Fire Officer Program, Coast Guard MLEA Boarding Officer Academy and the Coast Guard Chief Petty Officers Academy.  He holds additional certifications in emergency management, EMS and fire/ rescue.


Master Chief Wood's military awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, CG Commendation Medal (2), CG Achievement Medal (2), Commandant’s Letter of Commendation (2), Coxswain Insignia and Marine Safety Pro-pin.
