CGRU USNORTHCOM provides the Commander, USNORTHCOM with a ready-reserve force of deployable USCG expertise, prepared to execute USNORTHCOM's mission to conduct homeland defense, civil support, and security cooperation to defend and secure the United States and its interests.

CGRU USNORTHCOM consists of a 12-billet Joint Reserve command compromised primarily of mid to senior grade officers and enlisted members. The unit drills at the USNORTHCOM Command Headquarters in Colorado Springs, Colorado. CGRU members travel extensively throughout USNORTHCOM's AOR in support of homeland security initiatives and national security related exercises.

USNORTHCOM's AOR includes air, land, and sea approaches and encompasses the continental United States, Alaska, Canada, Mexico and the surrounding water out to approximately 500 nautical miles. It also includes the Gulf of Mexico, the Straits of Florida, portions of the Caribbean region to include The Bahamas, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

CGRU personnel work in close cooperation with USNORTHCOM Directorates and the Coast Guard Liaison Officer in support of USNORTHCOM's requirements. CGRU members serve in various USNORTHCOM directorates including the Interagency Coordination Directorate, J1 Manpower and Personnel, J3 Operations, J4 Logistics and Engineering, J5 Planning, J7 Exercises, and the NORAD-NORTHCOM (NC) N2C2 Command Center.
