Commander Sarah “Kathy” Felger is a native of Fort Wayne, Indiana and is a 1997 graduate of the U. S. Coast Guard Academy. She assumed Command of USCGC THETIS (WMEC 910) in May 2014 following an assignment as a Congressional Fellow in the U. S. Senate, detailed to the Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation.
She has over eight years of sea duty including tours as Executive Officer USCGC DEPENDABLE (WMEC 626) in Cape May, New Jersey, Commanding Officer USCGC DRUMMOND (WPB 1323), Executive Officer USCGC SITKINAK (WPB 1329), and Deck Watch Officer and First Lieutenant aboard USCGC MOHAWK (WMEC 913), the latter three all home-ported in Key West, Florida. She has also spent several summers as a Deck Watch Officer aboard USCGC EAGLE (WIX 327) and earned the Order of the Square Rigger in 2009.
Commander Felger’s assignments ashore include serving as a Company Officer at the U. S. Coast Guard Academy and as a Command Duty Officer in Law Enforcement and Search and Rescue for the Seventh Coast Guard District in Miami, Florida. She earned a Master’s Degree in Leadership, Education and Development from the University of Maryland in 2007.
Her awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, four Coast Guard Commendation Medals with the operational distinguishing device, two Coast Guard Achievement Medals with the operational distinguishing device, and various other personal and unit awards.
