Commander John J. Driscoll reported aboard as Commanding Officer, USCGC THETIS in June 2012 following an assignment as Deputy Chief, Air and Maritime Programs (J5), Headquarters United States Africa Command, Stuttgart, Germany.
At sea, Commander Driscoll has served as Officer in Charge of a Law Enforcement Detachment (LEDET); as Supply and then Operations Officer in USCGC MIDGETT (WHEC 726) highlighted by a 1999 deployment to the Western Pacific and Arabian Gulf as part of the USS CONSTELLATION Carrier Battle Group; as Commanding Officer in USCGC NANTUCKET (WPB 1316) and USCGC MATAGORDA (WPB 1303). His most recent assignment afloat was as Executive Officer in USCGC MOHAWK (WMEC 913) when the ship’s major accomplishments included the response to the disaster caused by the earthquake in Port au Prince, Haiti, and MOHAWK’s deployment to Africa as part of the African Maritime Law Enforcement Partnership (AMLEP).
Commander Driscoll has served ashore at the National Response Center, Coast Guard Headquarters; as a Search and Rescue Controller/Command Duty Officer at the Eleventh Coast Guard District/Coast Guard Pacific Area in Alameda, California; and as a lead planner in the Plans Division (J5), Headquarters North American Aerospace Defense Command/United States Northern Command, Colorado Springs, Colorado. While assigned to United States Africa Command, Commander Driscoll served as the Coast Guard liaison to, and an operational planner on, Joint Task Force ODYSSEY DAWN during the 2011 combat operations to protect civilians in Libya.
Commander Driscoll’s military awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Staff Commendation Medal, Coast Guard Commendation Medal, as well as other personal, unit and service awards.
Commander Driscoll holds a Bachelor’s Degree in History from the Virginia Military Institute and a Master’s Degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the United States Naval War College. Commander Driscoll is the first Coast Guard graduate of the Navy’s Maritime Advanced Warfighting School.
