CDR Terry M. Johns
CDR Terry M. Johns enlisted in the Coast Guard in 1982. His early tours of duty include Station Channel Islands, California, Cutter DECISIVE, Seventh District Operations Center Miami, and Group Mayport, FL.
In 1992 CDR Johns earned his commission upon graduation of Officer Candidate School in Yorktown, VA and was subsequently assigned to the Cutter GALLATIN in Governors Island, NY as Deck Watch Officer and Assistant Navigator. Following his tour in GALLATIN, CDR Johns was assigned as Executive Officer, USCGC ANACAPA in Petersburg, AK with a primary mission of fisheries enforcement in SE Alaska. CDR Johns later completed an advanced degree and follow-on tour at the Headquarters Office of Aids to Navigation. Following this tour, he served as Commanding Officer of USCGC GALVESTON ISLAND in Guam. The cutter was responsible for maintaining maritime law enforcement and security in Guam and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. In 2004, CDR Johns represented the Coast Guard as Coast Guard Liaison Officer to the U.S. Embassy in Nassau, Bahamas and provided training and assistance to maritime partners while strengthening foreign relations. Following his tour as CGLO, CDR Johns served as Executive Officer, USCGC DEPENDABLE in Cape May, NJ. The cutter performed multi-missions and law enforcement throughout the Atlantic and Caribbean regions. In 2008, CDR Johns was assigned as Coast Guard Liaison to Department of State. He was one of two Principal Facilitators in the U. S. Government’s Maritime Operational Threat Response (MOTR) process and served as the Competent Authority of the U.S. in support of drug interdiction. Following his tour in Washington, CDR Johns served as Director of the Coast Guard Auxiliary for the Fifth Coast Guard District, Northern Region where he was responsible for policy, training and readiness of over 2600 Auxiliarists that support the Coast Guard. He now serves as Commanding Officer, USCGC VIGOROUS which is currently homeported in Little Creek, VA.
CDR Johns holds an Associate’s Degree in Computer Science and a Bachelor of Science in Business from Charleston Southern University and a Master of Science in Management through the University of Maryland Distance Learning Program. He also holds a merchant mariner license as Master 100 tons.
His awards include two Meritorious Service Medals, four Coast Guard Commendation Medals, two Coast Guard Achievement Medals and two Coast Guard Commandant's Letters of Commendation.
