Shield: Azure (dark blue shield backing) represents the Coast Guard and coast waters where the mission of VIGILANT is carried out. The anchor stands for the world-wide scope of the cutter's operations in search and rescue and law-enforcement missions. The griffin, traditionally renowned for valor and vigilance, reflects the ship's motto, “SEMPER VIGILANS” (always vigilant). The color gold on the griffin and anchor stands for excellence.

Crest: The compass rose denotes global navigation and activities, while the demi-trident represents authority at sea. The wreath of laurel is for honor and achievement.
