CDR Peter S. Niles military service began as a Military Policeman in the U.S. Army from 1984 to 1986; where he then enlisted in the Coast Guard. CDR Niles rose through the enlisted ranks from Seaman to Quartermaster First Class and then attended Officer Candidate School in 1996.  CDR Niles is a permanent cutterman with almost 17 years of sea service and has served proudly aboard eight cutters. He has previously commanded three ships, the 87-ft patrol boat ALBACORE, the 175-ft buoy tender GEORGE COBB,  the 225-ft buoy tender OAK.  CDR Niles other afloat tours include the cutters MORRO BAY, GENTIAN, IRIS, COWSLIP, SWEETGUM, and BARQUE EAGLE.

CDR Niles ashore assignments include tours at Coast Guard Group Boston, the Seventh District Command Center in Miami, Florida, the school chief for the USCG Chief Warrant Officers Development Program, Coast Guard Office of International Affairs, and the Coast Guard Office of Navigation Systems.  CDR Niles reports to SPENCER from Liberia, West Africa where he was assigned as the Maritime Advisor to the U.S. Ambassador.

CDR Niles awards and decorations include the Silver Lifesaving Medal, two Meritorious Service Medals, Four Coast Guard Commendation medals, two Coast Guard Achievement Medals, Army Achievement medal, two Commandant’s Letter of Commendations, the Iraq Campaign Medal, and numerous unit awards.
