Commander Michael L. Gatlin
Commander Gatlin enlisted in the
Coast Guard in 1982, completing tours at TRACEN Cape May and in USCGC
OUACHITA, homeported in Chattanooga, TN. Following graduation from Aviation
Structural Mechanic “A” school in 1984, he was assigned to the Aviation
Training Center Mobile, AL and then Air Station Elizabeth City, NC in 1989.
After receiving his commission from Officer Candidate School in July of
1991, he was assigned to the Training Quota Management Center in Chesapeake,
VA. In June of 1993, he reported to USCGC GENTIAN homeported in Atlantic
Beach, NC as Operations Officer and then in June of 1996 to Commander,
Seventh Coast Guard District, Office of Aids to Navigation as Chief of Field
Operations. In January of 1997, Commander Gatlin reported to USCGC WOODRUSH
homeported in Sitka, AK as Executive Officer and then in May of 1998 to
USCGC PLANETREE homeported in Ketchikan, AK as Executive Officer. In July of
1999 he reported to USCGC CHINCOTEAGUE homeported in Key West, FL as
Commanding Officer from July of 1999 until July of 2001 when he reported to
Commander, Eighth Coast Guard District, Office of Search and Rescue as
Senior SAR Controller and Assistant Branch Chief. In July of 2003 he
reported to USCGC MAPLE, homeported in Sitka, AK as Commanding Officer
serving until August of 2006 when he reported to Integrated Support Command
Kodiak as Chief Personnel Division. In December of 2007, Commander Gatlin
reported to USCGC MUNRO homeported in Kodiak, AK as Executive Officer
serving until July of 2010 when he reported to USCGC RELIANCE homeported in
Kittery, ME as Commanding Officer, his eighth afloat assignment.
Commander Gatlin has been awarded five Coast Guard Commendation Medals,
three Achievement Medals as well as numerous personal awards and unit awards
and citations.
