Command Philosophy

Desired Effect
          Positive Effect

In 1861 USRC HARRIET LANE achieved the “Desired Effect” by successfully executing the mission.  Over 150 years later USCGC HARRIET LANE remains focused on attaining the ‘Desired Effect’.  The mission is why we exist and remains our primary objective.  Everything we do as a ship, department, team or as individuals must focus completely on achieving the ‘Desired Effect’.

Know Your Job – Become an expert in your assignments.  Get into the references, research the data and most importantly TRAIN.  Continually increase your knowledge and skill level; become the subject matter expert, you can never know too much.

Know Your Team – Get to know those you are working with.  Operating a cutter is a team sport and cannot be done individually.  Learn how to capitalize on each others strengths and mitigate weaknesses.  NO individual is more important than the team.  Be ready to take on the assignment of those around you.  We can only achieve the ‘Desired Effect’ by working as a team.

Know Your Purpose – Know what role you play in the ship’s overall purpose.  EVERY position and job assigned on this ship is critical and exists for a reason.   Whether you are the OOD or the Lookout; the Boarding Officer or handling the sea painter, your role is important and how you execute your job is imperative to our overall success.

In addition to the ‘Desired Effect’ I challenge each member to achieve a ‘Positive Effect’.  This goes beyond the mission and pertains to all aspects of your life; how you treat people, take care of routine tasks and what you do when no one is looking.  Only by having a ‘Positive Affect’ can you achieve a ‘Positive Effect’.

Positive Impact – Each day you have an opportunity to make a Positive Impact on the world around you.  Treat everyone you come across with respect and dignity regardless of who they are; whether it is a migrant on the flight deck, someone taking a tour of the ship, or anyone you pass on the street. As a member of HARRIET LANE , your impact extends farther than you think; make sure its positive.

Positive Influence – Strive to be a positive influence on those important people in your life: Your mentors who provide you valuable advice; your peers who you rely on; those individuals who look up to you; and the friends and family who support you.  Each of these groups are essential and it is important you remain a positive influence in your interactions with everyone.

Positive Results – Take pride in your ship and take care of yourself.  There is only one HARRIET LANE and it is every member’s responsibility to take care of her.  Similarly there is only one YOU; so take care of yourself physically and emotionally.  Remember, “Without a rescuer, you don’t have a rescue”.

Focusing on the ‘Desired Effect’ and striving to achieve a ‘Positive Effect’ will ensure success for you and HARRIET LANE .

Finally, make sure to enjoy your time onboard and this wonderful opportunity we call ‘getting underway’.  There are events and things you can only experience “AT SEA”, count yourself LUCKY!
