Command Philosophy

From Commanding Officer, CDR Matthew T. Meilstrup

Safety: This is an inherently dangerous job; be conscious of the risks and take positive steps to eliminate/minimize them.

Homefront: Take care of your families/loved ones; maintain a proper work-life balance.

Integrity: Nothing is more important than your word.

People: Take care of and respect each other!  Train, teach, mentor - we're all developing our reliefs (the future Coast Guard).

Mission Execution: We will do our jobs professionally and positively. Be flexible - sometimes they will change unexpectedly.

Advance: My expectation is that everybody will depart CONFIDENCE one pay grade (or more) higher.

Teamwork: Contribute to the best of your ability.  Help each other.

Endurance: Get proper rest, eat right, exercise and responsibly manage alcohol.

Stewardship: We will be efficient and smart in how we operate the public's vessel.  We are accountable to the public and each other.  CONFIDENCE will be clean.

Going to sea is a challenging, rewarding and enjoyable opportunity with a rich tradition.  I am proud to be a Cutterman; the camaraderie and respect between good shipmates is not duplicated anywhere else in the Coast Guard.  I am honored to sail with you and look forward to enjoying the next two years with all of you and your families.  You should be similarly excited about CONFIDENCE - this is YOUR ship – get involved…every day.

Be the very best sailor you can be - the sea demands it, the Cutterman tradition supports it and I expect it.
