Commander William J. Lane
Commander William J. Lane was born in Atlanta, GA to Carolynn and Lieutenant Colonel Bill Lane (U.S. Army, retired).
Commander Lane graduated from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in 1991 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Science. In 2002, he graduated from George Mason University in Fairfax, VA with a Masters of Science in Information Systems.
In addition to his initial tour of duty as a Deck Watch Officer aboard USCGC HARRIET LANE (WMEC 903) in Portsmouth, VA, Commander Lane has had the honor of serving aboard a variety of afloat units. He served as Commanding Officer of USCGC POINT SAL (WPB 82352) in Grand Isle, LA; Operations Officer of USCGC GALLATIN (WHEC 721) in Charleston, SC; and Executive Officer of USCGC NORTHLAND (WMEC 904) in Portsmouth, VA. Commander Lane served as a Deployable Team Leader and Instructor at the International Training Division in Yorktown, VA; Command and Control System Architect in the Office of Electronic Systems at Coast Guard Headquarters in Washington, D.C.; and Chief of the Systems Support Division in the Office of Command, Control, and Navigation Systems at Coast Guard Headquarters. Commander Lane also deployed to Haiti during Operation SECURE TOMORROW for over 100 days as the Operations and International Training Officer in support of the Maritime Component Commander to the Combined Joint Task Force. Commander Lane has been awarded the Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), the Coast Guard Commendation Medal (four awards), the U.S. Navy Commendation Medal, the Coast Guard Achievement Medal, and various other unit and service awards.
Commander Lane is married to the former Robin R. Breding, a native of Albuquerque, NM. They have two children; Zachary (sophomore in high school) and Joshua (seventh grade).
Commander Lane assumed command of CGC Bear on 13 May 2010.
