Commander David W. Ramassini was born in Pittsburgh, PA to John and Kathleen Ramassini.
Commander Ramassini graduated from the United States Coast Guard Academy in 1992, earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Management. He subsequently earned a Masters Degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the United States Naval War College in 2005.
Commander Ramassini’s initial tour of duty was Deck Watch Officer aboard USCGC HARRIET LANE (WMEC 903) in Portsmouth, VA. In addition to this tour, he has served in multiple afloat assignments including: Weapons Officer of USCGC MIDGETT (WHEC 726) in Seattle, Washington; Commanding Officer of USCGC KEY LARGO (WPB-1324) in Savannah, GA and Key West, FL; professional crew onboard USCG Barque Eagle (WIX 327) in New London, CT; Commanding Officer of USCGC BARANOF (WPB 1318) and USCGC WRANGELL (WPB 1332) in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom; and most recently as Executive Officer of the first in class National Security Cutter, USCGC BERTHOLF (WMSL 750) in Alameda, CA.
Commander Ramassini has also completed several staff assignments to include: Senior Instructor at the Maritime Law Enforcement School in Yorktown, VA; Company Officer at the United States Coast Guard Academy in New London, CT; Maritime Force Protection Unit Program Manager and Senior Analyst in the Office of Counterterrorism and Defense Operations at Coast Guard Headquarters in Washington, DC; and Coast Guard Counternarcotics, Alien Migration, and Maritime Homeland Security & Defense Liaison to the Director Joint Staff, Strategic Plans and Policy at the Pentagon in Arlington, VA.
Commander Ramassini's personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Coast Guard Commendation Medal (four awards), the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Coast Guard Achievement Medal (two awards), and the Commandant's Letter of Commendation Ribbon Bar, and various other unit and service awards.
Commander Ramassini is married to the former Amanda Ausfeld, a native of Albany, NY and have three children.
Commander Ramassini assumed command of CGC Bear on 06 July 2012.
