Ensign Crotty pictured here on the bridge of a cutter shortly after his graduation from the Academy. Crotty had a brief but colorful career stateside before deploying to the Cavite Navy Yard in the Philippines Coast Guard Magazine, May 1949

The wooden minesweeper Quail served with distinction throughout the last days of Bataan and. Crotty served as executive officer for much of that time.

Crotty had a solid academic record; however, he excelled in leadership and athletics. Crotty served as class president, company commander and captain of the football team all in his senior year at the Coast Guard Academy (Coast Guard Academy Tide Rips, 1934).
