The United States has nominated Mr. Jeffrey G. Lantz for the post of Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) by means of a nomination letter dated February 10, 2011, from Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
The United States offers the candidacy of Mr. Lantz in the strong belief that he is the best qualified candidate to continue the excellence in leadership and improve the internal management of the
organization. He brings to the job his long-standing experience that spans over 36 years as a military officer and as a government servant, including more than a decade of service as the head of
numerous United States delegations to IMO.

In this position he is responsible for developing the Coast Guard’s national and international regulations, standards, and policies to enhance maritime safety, security and environmental
stewardship and leads the development of United State positions and representation for every aspect of the IMO and the International Labour Organization.
Key Attributes:
Throughout his career he has demonstrated the ability to run and manage large organizations efficiently and effectively, to successfully implement change by leveraging coalitions and achieving
consensus. When responsible for budget development and execution, he has consistently and skillfully managed and used resources and infrastructure to improve performance, morale, and working
conditions. He currently manages a $50 million budget and leads a multidisciplinary workforce composed of 250 people.
He is a naval architect, marine engineer and marine surveyor. He has served aboard ship and held numerous positions in Coast Guard marine safety offices overseeing ship inspections and was
the Commanding Officer for the Coast Guard’s office that reviews vessel designs for compliance with U.S. and IMO marine safety, security and environmental protection standards.
He has been active in a very broad range of IMO’s work since 2000. He currently serves as the Chairman of the IMO Council, the IMO’s second highest governing body responsible for IMO
governance, including budget approval and heads the U.S. delegations to the key technical committees and numerous subcommittees.
In the nomination, Secretary Clinton announces that “Mr. Lantz has my full support and that of the U.S. Government as a whole.” She goes on to say that the nomination of Mr. Lantz “demonstrates the
strong commitment of the United States to remain an involved member of IMO, fully dedicated to the organization’s aims and objectives.” Secretary Clinton’s letter emphasizes that “the United States
has been a key participant and supporter of the IMO” since its establishment, and concludes her nomination letter by declaring that Mr. Lantz’s overall record “highlights his professional background,
achievements, and experience, which make him, in my view, the best qualified candidate to continue IMO’s excellence and leadership in promoting safe, secure, and efficient shipping on clean oceans.”
