minimum international standards for training and certification of seafarers;
principles of safe watchkeeping;
maritime safety, security, and environmental protection culture in all ship
operations;
review of the principles of safe manning of ships and training issues related to the
human element taking into account technological, organizational, and social
developments;
promotion of awareness of lessons learned from the analysis of accident and
incident reports and information;
review, updating and revision of IMO model courses; and
co-ordination with relevant UN bodies, IGOs and NGOs on international
standards related to the training and certification of seafarers.

The United States is represented on the STW Sub-Committee by the Coast Guard. The Head of Delegation for STW is the
Coast Guard's Marine Personnel and Qualifications Division Chief, Ms. Mayte Medina. Ms. Medina is supported by the
Alternate Head of Delegation, Mr. Stephen Hubchen, the Administrative Program Manager, Mr. Davis Breyer, and the various
delegation advisors.

The U.S. delegation holds a public meeting several weeks prior to departing for the IMO meeting. The purpose of the public meeting
is to provide an opportunity for the public to interface with the Coast Guard on the U.S. position for each agenda item. Members of the public
interested in attending must contact the meeting coordinator at least 7 days prior to the meeting. The basic meeting details are below however, additional
details can be provided by contacting the meeting coordinator.
At the end of each STW meeting, a final report is prepared for submission to the Maritime Safety Committee. The final report provides a record of the issues discussed and actions taken by the Sub-Committee. The final reports of the most recent STW meetings are provided for your reference.
