Unit Health Promotion Coordinator Course ( mandated HPC "C" school)

August 14-17, 2012

Location: Coast Guard Academy, New London CT

To pre-register a member for the course, the command must send an email to Yvette Lillge (regional HPM) naming the primary HPC, member's emplid #, unit opfac #, and a statement that the member meets the UHPC qualifications in COMDTINST M6200.1A.

 

 

 

Mind & Body Program

Open To All Active Duty Members And Reservists On AD.

This weight loss program is for active duty members and Reservist on active duty who are weight probation. Members who enroll will receive unlimited coaching support, moderated group forums and live chat with coaches, e-lessons, resources and community support. Through the mastery of eight essential practices for a Healthy Mind & Body members will learn to gain control of their personal environment, master the art of eating well, identify and defeat negative thoughts, navigate difficult situations, sit less and move more, tame their stress response and take back their time and priorities.

Health Promotion Program Responsibilities:

The Regional Health Promotion Manager (HPM) is attached to Health, Safety, & Work-Life Field Office Boston within the Office of Work-Life. Your HPM shall provide guidance to commands, training to Unit Health Promotion Coordinators (UHPC) and provide health promotion services to Coast Guard beneficiaries within the First District. She is your subject matter expert regarding health and wellness in the Coast Guard.

 

Services from the HPM include:

-Support the development of UHPC's with ongoing mentoring, training and resources.


-Assist commands with environmental assessments to determine their health promotion programming needs.Working on the boat

- Coordinate or conduct lifestyle/fitness assessments (i.e., Personal Wellness Profile (PWP)). *If your unit would like to complete the PWP program contact your UHPC or regional HPM.

 

- Manage and train Unit Health Promotion Coordinators.

 

- Conduct health-related presentations and workshops including:

- Provide educational materials and guidance for tobacco cessation.

 

- Provide weight management training and education to medical personnel and units, and conducts individual counseling for members who are on weight probation. 

 

- Establish and determine appropriate educational resources for weight management.

- Conduct health screenings including:

-Conduct Stress Management Training and Counseling (using the Essi Stress Maps & Stress Profiler).

New: What supplements are banned in the Coast Guard?


The following reference sites list the supplements that are banned in the
Coast Guard.

1) Anabolic Steroids. See CG Regulations Manual (M5000.3B 9.D.15.C or p.9-7) for
guidance on anabolic steroids.

2) Anabolic Agents. Refer to the NCAA list for those substances.
(link to copy of the NCAA list).

3) Supplements that are banned by the FDA. (below is an excerpt from the
CG Medical Manual, Chapter 10.A.8.B).

b. Approval of medication. Only those items that have been licensed and
approved by the Food and Drug Administration (with the exception of vitamins
with an established RDA) are authorized for use in Coast Guard health care
facilities. Coast Guard health care facilities shall not purchase or
dispense "herbal supplements" or "dietary supplements". Active duty members
may neither possess nor purchase, via any venue, herbal supplements, dietary
products, or alternative health care substances banned by the FDA for sale
or use in the United States. Patients should inform their healthcare
providers if taking any type of herbal supplements to avoid potential drug
interactions. Aviators and flight crew members shall follow guidance
provided in the CG Aviation Manual, Chapter 12, Section B.3.h. Commands can
contact the Collateral Duty Pharmacy Officer or HSWL SUPACT Pharmacy Officer for
further guidance.
