The purpose of the Liaison Officer to the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) is to further the diversity goals of the Coast Guard by increasing awareness among African Americans (with the targeted qualifications for accession into the Coast Guard) of the career and education opportunities in our service. The Liaison performs this outreach mission by leveraging our association with HBCUs in order to open doors for meetings with the Minority Serving Institutions and their respective students. By sharing the excellent Coast Guard career and education opportunities the hope is to increase the number of applications from qualified African American candidates for Coast Guard civilian, active duty, and reserve jobs.

In support of the Commandant's Diversity Strategic Plan, the Coast Guard HBCU Ambassador Program connects senior Coast Guard leaders with HBCUs to "Expand Outreach to Achieve Access Opportunity for Underrepresented Populations."
