Congratulations to the Coast Guard Academy Men’s Lacrosse Team,
our Diversity Champions of the Week! The Diversity Champion
distinction is bestowed upon individuals or units who have made
significant contributions in support of the Commandant's
Diversity Strategic Plan and
OPTASK Diversity. The men’s lacrosse team from the Coast Guard Academy has participated in several clinics where cadets and student athletes were paired up with children from culturally diverse communities in order to make a positive impact on the local youth as they mentored them during hands-on clinics. These clinics were hosted through the U.S. Lacrosse Building Relationships to Initiate Diversity Growth and Enrichment (BRIDGE) program. The nationally established BRIDGE program brings the sport of lacrosse to the forefront of creating positive influences and life-skill lessons to youth in communities not previously exposed to the sport. Key leaders from the within the Coast Guard Academy Men’s Lacrosse Program and the Old Bears Alumni have coordinated fly-ins and MH-65C helicopter static displays, mobile training trailers and Tactical Operators clad to showcase the latest weapons and tactical gear in an effort to market the Coast Guard and tackle the issue of diversity head-on. In addition, the Coast Guard
Lacrosse team recently teamed up with student athletes from
Morgan State University (a Historically Black College and
University) to compete in what is becoming a fall tradition
between the two clubs.
The Coast Guard Academy Men’s Lacrosse program strives to
further the diversity goals of the Coast Guard through the sport
of lacrosse by increasing awareness of CG career and education
opportunities among all minorities. By sharing the excellent
Coast Guard career and education opportunities, the goal is to
increase applications received from qualified minority
candidates for the Coast Guard Academy and other accession
sources including Coast Guard civilian, active duty and reserve
officer and enlisted opportunities.
Conversely, the cadets/athletes are increasing their
diversity awareness, ultimately becoming stronger and more
effective leaders as they prepare to enter the fleet as junior
officers and future leaders of our service. |

and
OPTASK Diversity. On 05 April 2012, a ceremony was held at the Coast Guard Aviation Training Center in Mobile, Alabama to officially charter the Commander Everett Alvarez, Jr. local chapter of ANSO. We were honored to have both Rear Admiral William D. Rodriguez (ANSO National President, USN, Retired) and Commander Everett Alvarez, Jr. (USN, Retired) (pictured) in attendance. A true national hero, Commander Alvarez was the first American pilot to be shot down and held as a prisoner of war (POW) in North Vietnam. He spent over 8 years in captivity, making him the second longest-held POW in American history. ANSO's mission is to assist the Sea Service Chief's efforts in Hispanic workforce recruitment and retention by (a) fostering the personal growth and professional development of officers, enlisted, and civilians; (b) providing mentorship, networking, training, and education opportunities; and (c) engaging the Hispanic Communities through outreach initiatives. ANSO's vision it to serve as the acknowledged leader in recruiting, developing, and retaining Hispanics in the Sea Services. In support of the Commandant's Diversity Strategic Plan, the Commander Everett Alvarez, Jr. local chapter of ANSO was chartered by members from each of the three large Coast Guard units in Mobile, Alabama: Aviation Training Center, Gulf Strike Team, and Sector Mobile. This chapter aims to assure a diverse workforce, improve workforce cultural climate, and expand outreach initiatives to underrepresented populations in our community. We are proud of our accomplishment and look forward to growing this local chapter of ANSO through worthwhile initiatives for all members of Team Coast Guard. The ANSO Commander Everett Alvarez Jr. Chapter Charter Team's leadership, mentorship, and devotion to duty are exemplary and serve as a great example of the positive impact a small group can have on a community. Congratulations to the Central Intercollegiate Athletic
Association (CIAA) Recruiting Initiative Team, our
Diversity Champions of the Week! The Diversity Champion
distinction is bestowed upon individuals or units who have made
significant contributions in support of the Commandant's
Diversity Strategic Plan
and
OPTASK Diversity. The CIAA was founded in 1912 as the Colored Intercollegiate Athletic Association and is the oldest African-American athletic conference in the nation. The CIAA consists of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) spanning the east coast from Pennsylvania to North Carolina. The CIAA Tournament took place 27 Feburary-3 March 2012 in Charlotte, N.C. The Tournament is recognized as one of the nation's premier annual sporting events. Academic success is a staple of the conference. The CIAA recognizes the academic achievement of its student-athletes annually by naming its top student-athletes to the Commissioner's All-Academic Team. The conference also recognizes the Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year for student-athletes who have excelled on the field and in the classroom. The CIAA Tournament week included a high school career day and Career Expo that was attended by over 8,000 students ranging from high school to college undergrads. Over 100 companies, federal, state, and local organizations were in attendance for recruiting efforts. The Marine Corps had over 20 military officers in representation which included the Commanding Officer of the Marine Corps Recruiting Command and Major General Ronald L. Bailey Commanding General, 1st Marine Division (pictured.) The topics discussed with students included: increasing minority employment/recruiting from HBCU institutions by promoting active duty, Reserve, and civilian career opportunities available in the USCG. Members of the CIAA Recruiting Initiative spoke to students about the benefits of the Coast Guard which focused on mentoring, leadership, and allowed the students to ask questions on a one on one basis. This effort has provided the platform to advance efforts to increase the number of minority students applying for the CSPI program. During the week, LT Roberto Concepcion, initiated contact with Johnson C. Smith University’s (JCSU) career services staff and developed the idea to provide a forum for JCSU students to get a better understanding of the Coast Guard and the opportunities available to their students by taking a grass roots approach with the student population. LT Concepcion scheduled a meeting with JCSU career services staff and discussed focusing on efforts to strengthening partnerships and alliances with JCSU. Topics discussed included sponsorships for events, meeting with the student body at a future date to conduct question and answer sessions, and participation in JCSU career events/fairs. The recruiting team received a lot of interest about the CSPI program and the students were excited about the Coast Guard being present to provide them additional insight in a face to face setting. The team included CDR Adrian West, CDR Bruce Walker, LCDR Chester Warren, LCDR Dwayne Meekins, AETC Steve Gilbert, and ETC James Emrich. The CIAA Recruiting Initiative Team's leadership, mentorship, and devotion to duty are exemplary and serve as a great example of the positive impact a small group can have on a community. As a direct result of his efforts and outreach, the Coast Guard is making strides toward achieving the vision set out in the Diversity Strategic Plan. On January 31st, in recognition of African American History Month, an in an effort to educate unit members on African American contributions to the United States military, Air Station Miami provided members time during the workday to attend a special screening of the recently released motion picture "Red Tails." Several members of the command capitalized on the opportunity and were surprised when they were joined by one of the remaining Tuskegee Airman, LT. COL Eldridge Williams (pictured). Earlier in February, keeping with the tradition of recognizing the outstanding contributions of African Americans, Air Station Miami and the Miami chapter of the National Naval Officers Association held its very own special viewing of the film "Rescue Men: The Story of the Pea Island Life Savers." The documentary movie chronicled the Coast Guard's only all African American lifesaving crew and their daring rescue of the schooner E.S. NEWMAN in 1896. Additionally, during the African American History Month observance, Air Station Miami will serve historically African American meals on Wednesdays in the galley. Air Station Miami's leadership, mentorship, and devotion to duty are exemplary and serve as a great example of the positive impact a small group can have on a community. As a direct result of your efforts and outreach, the Coast Guard is making strides toward achieving the vision set out in the Diversity Strategic Plan. Jersey our
Diversity Champion of the Week! The Diversity Champion
distinction is bestowed upon individuals or units who have made
significant contributions in support of the Commandant's
Diversity Strategic Plan
and
OPTASK Diversity. When approached by the local Hispanic community of boaters looking for a New Jersey approved safe boating course, Flotilla 44 saw a great opportunity to reach out to a population who, although active in the boating community, was not able to successfully obtain a New Jersey State Marine Police Permit. Initial response to the course was overwhelming ending up with a class of 29 with eight on a waiting list. With the help of a local marina who provided the classroom, two instructors and two interpreters the first class went extremely well. Class participation was excellent with the process being an instructor reading the slide, with an interpreter translating and asking for questions. Although some questions were asked in English, all answers were provided in Spanish to ensure all had a full understanding. At the end of the day, all but one successfully passed the exam and earned their New Jersey Boating Permit. Pictured above, Flotilla Commander Mr. Wilson Santiago interprets during the course. Auxiliary Flotilla 44's leadership, mentorship, and devotion to duty are exemplary and serve as a great example of the positive impact a small group can have on a community. As a direct result of your efforts and outreach, the Coast Guard is making strides toward achieving the vision set out in the Diversity Strategic Plan.
