The annual cap for TA is $4,500.00 for active duty personnel, selected Reservists and civilian employees. The annual cap falls within each fiscal year (1 October to 30 September).
Note: The established TA maximums payable per fiscal year does not mean that the Coast Guard guarantees to pay the full amounts detailed above. Budget constraints may require further TA policy changes.

Tuition for approved high school completion programs will be fully funded for personnel who have not been awarded a high school or equivalency diploma.
College courses (graduate, undergraduate) will be paid at 100 percent of the cost of an Institution's tuition for each course. The maximum payable per Semester Hour is $250.00, or Quarter Hour is $166.67. The maximum TA payable per individual per year is set annually by Commandant (G-WT) for active duty, SELRES, Public Health Service personnel, and civilian employees. Once the member uses the maximum allotted amount per year, no waivers will be granted for additional money.
Developmental courses may be authorized if required by the Institution prior to taking a higher-level course. Many colleges require a developmental course in Math, English and reading if the member has been out of school for several years. Members will be informed that these courses (usually numbered starting with zero "0" as the first digit) are "not transferable".
Direct expenses for instruction such as laboratory, studio, and shop fees may be included in the computation of education expenses covered by the 100% limitation for off-duty education. Provided, these costs are based on specific fees or charges customarily levied by educational Institutions and are directly tied to the course for which the fee is required. TA will not cover the cost of tools, protective or other equipment, manuals or textbooks, which become the property of the student. In cases where flat fees are charged, which include non-consumable items, the Institution must furnish an itemized cost breakdown of the total cost of the course. Only that portion of the fee that meets the use and consumable criteria will be eligible for TA.
