International Acquisition Programs

Painting has been completed on the Nigerian’s new vessel, the Thunder (formerly the U.S. Coast Guard cutter Chase, a decommissioned 378-foot high endurance cutter), which has been in drydock in Alameda, Calif. The Thunder departed for its new homeport in Nigeria on November 21, 2011. The Thunder was transferred to Nigeria through the Excess Defense Article program on May 13, 2011.

The Office of International Acquisition is the critical link between the overall U.S. Coast Guard acquisition effort and the international community. Through the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program, the office establishes long-term partnerships and provides allied partners with access to the same assets the Coast Guard uses everyday. The program is also responsible for the transfer of excess, decommissioned assets called Excess Defense Articles. Learn more>>
