President Signs Homeland Security Budget; Deepwater Program Funded at $1.06 Billion

President Bush signed the fiscal year 2007 Homeland Security Appropriations Act into law Oct. 4 during a ceremony in Scottsdale, Ariz., following congressional passage of the $34.8 billion spending measure Sept. 29. The bill provides $7.8 billion for the Coast Guard, including $1.06 billion for the Deepwater Program —an increase of $131.4 million above the president’s original Deepwater Program budget request submitted earlier this year.

“This is a good bill,” the president said. “It will help us deploy nuclear detection equipment at our ports of entry, raise security standards at the nation's chemical plants, safeguard American cities against weapons of mass destruction, and stop terrorists seeking to enter our country.”

Secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff applauded Congress for passing the bill and commended President Bush for signing it into law. “The DHS FY 2007 appropriations bill will allow us to make significant progress in every aspect of our mission,” Chertoff said, “but particularly in three critical areas: improving border security, enhancing chemical security, and strengthening FEMA [Federal Emergency Management Agency].” Read more
