SHOULDER GUN TYPE LINE THROWING APPLIANCE
APPROVAL CATEGORY: 160.031
APPROVAL GUIDANCE & INFORMATION:
Follow the requirements of 46 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR)
160.031. The Coast Guard does not test materials or systems for
approval but rather specifies the required test methods and minimum
performance criteria for approval. Product testing must be
performed by a Coast Guard Accepted Independent Laboratory.
NON STANDARD APPLIANCES: Other
types of device designs (such as non-pyrotechnic devices) can be
reviewed on a case-by-case basis for approval based on equivalent
performance. Please contact our CG-ENG-4 office for details.
SUBMITTAL PACKAGE: Please
submit the follow information in the Submittal Package:
- A cover letter requesting Coast Guard Type Approval of the Line
Throwing Appliance.
- A test report from a USCG Accepted Independent Laboratory showing
compliance of the Line Throwing Appliance with 46 CFR 159.010, 46 CFR
160.031-5, and 46 CFR 160.031-3
- Evidence that an acceptable follow-up factory inspection program
is in place IAW 46 CFR 159.007 and 46 CFR 160.031-5(b).
- Required drawings/plans of the equipment IAW 46 CFR 160.031-3.

Once the equipment has been approved by this office, it will receive
Coast Guard Type Approval and a Certificate of Approval (COA).
The COA will be issued for 5 years and will remain valid during that
time period if the product meets the testing of the Quality Control
Program.

APPROVAL GUIDANCE & INFORMATION:
For Coast Guard requirements for Line-Throwing Appliances see 46, CFR
160.040. The Coast Guard does not test materials or systems for
approval but rather specifies the required test methods and minimum
performance criteria for approval. Product testing must be
performed by a Coast Guard Accepted Independent Laboratory.
This product can be approved under the US/EC Mutual Recognition
Agreement (MRA) on marine equipment.
NON-STANDARD APPLIANCES: Other

requirements for Approval Testing and Production Testing see Section
2/4.
- Required drawings/plans of the equipment IAW 46 CFR 160.040-3.
