Welcome to the CG-5PS Advanced Education Webpage! Here you can find information about the Marine Engineering, Fire Protection, Chemical Engineering and the Electrical Power & Controls Engineering advanced education programs. You can also locate us on HomePort.
Members desiring a challenging and rewarding career with a variety of opportunities in positions of increasing responsibility are encouraged to apply. Graduates will be placed in positions of significant responsibility that will directly impact the Marine Safety industry.
The Marine Engineering program offers members a chance to earn degrees in Naval Architecture, Mechanical Engineering, Ocean Engineering, Human Factors Engineering and other technical disciplines from a number of schools, including MIT, University of Michigan and Virginia Tech.
The Marine Engineering postgraduate program also includes the Electrical Power & Controls Engineering, Fire Protection Engineering and Chemical Engineering programs.
The Electrical Power & Controls Program program offers members a chance to earn a post-graduate degree in Electrical Engineering. Current topics include technologically advanced electric hybrid propulsion systems and automatic controls such as those used to manage dynamic positioning systems (DPS) on offshore supply vessels and floating offshore energy facilities.
The Fire Protection Program gives members an opportunity to earn a postgraduate degree in Fire Protection Engineering. You will apply science and engineering principles to protect life, property, and the environment from fire and smoke.
The Chemical Engineering Program gives members an opportunity to earn a postgraduate degree in Chemical Engineering. USCG Chemical Engineers help ensure the safe transportation of bulk liquid and solid hazardous materials by sea. They lead exciting and technically challenging projects including design review of vessels and marine facilities, analysis of new chemical cargoes

The Prevention Officer Career Guide was published in 2010 by the Director of Prevention Policy (CG-5PC). It provides career guidance for a number of different career paths within Prevention, and can assist Officers in planning a career in Prevention which includes postgraduate school.
Twice a year, CG-5PS publishes the Marine Safety Engineering Newsletter. This newsletter provides vital information regarding current projects in CG-5PS and at the Marine Safety Center, glimpses into the Marine Safety Engineering field, and highlights of the Marine Safety Program, including recent graduates of the Advanced Education program.
