FIND A MENTOR

The first step in finding a mentor is to learn more about the mentoring program and how the program will help you achieve your personal and professional goals. What will you get out of it? You will get a listening ear, valuable direction, gaps filled in, doors opened, different perspectives.

The Coast Guard Mentoring Program recommends following these eight steps:

  1. Learn what mentoring is all about.
  2. Review mentoring suggestions.
  3. Make a match.
  4. Have your first meeting.
  5. Continue the partnership.
  6. Have a six-month check-up.
  7. Continue with personal growth.
  8. Conclude the mentoring partnership

Here at the Training Center, we have grouped skills and knowledge to help direct you to the right mentoring resource - either short term or long term mentoring. Follow one of the links listed below to find the right local person who can help you meet your personal and professional goals.

EDUCATION

There are many people attached to the Training Center who are presently taking college courses. Some are doing it through a long distance learning program via the Internet while others are attending local colleges. Some have studied and passed CLEP and DANTES exams. They are striving to reach personal and professional goals they have set for themselves.

FAMILY ISSUES

Friends helping friends...shipmates helping shipmates.  As we are such a mobile population, it takes a great deal of time and effort to learn about each new community into which we move. By the time we finally get the hang of it, it is time to relocate-this knowledge is then lost to newcomers. The type of information that would be helpful includes information on: our local school systems including special circumstances in regards to the needs of our children; shopping and recreational activities; educational opportunities for adults; churches and religious programs; access to medical care. All of this information is invaluable to families just moving into the area or ones that are starting out on new journeys in their life.

If you have a specific family need or relocation issue, the Work-Life Staff is available to assist you.

To Be a Family Issues Mentor. If you think you can have information that could be beneficial to others and would like to be a supportive listener or mentor, your services are greatly appreciated and needed. By sharing a little of your time and experiences, you can greatly enhance the quality of service and the quality of life of other members of the Coast Guard Family. Please fill out the application provided and submit it to the Training Center Cape May's CMC.

To Seek a Family Issues Mentor. Follow the eight steps to find a mentor and contact one of the mentors listed below or someone else who may be a good match for you. For more guidance in finding a mentor, review the Mentoring Training Guide: So you want to find a mentor.
