Senior Leadership Principles and Skills
About the Course
The Senior Leadership Principles and Skills course is held at the Leadership Development Center, New London, CT. The purpose of the course is to build leadership knowledge, abilities, skills and attitudes of mid-level employees. Areas of study include: self-awareness and learning, effective communications, influencing others, respect for others and diversity management, team building, mentoring, management and process improvement, decision making and problem solving, conflict management, vision development and implementation, partnering, and strategic thinking.
The training requires participants to be away from their position for 5 days. All participants will be lodged at Munro hall at the CG Academy.
Participant Objectives
- Learn how to be an effective leader.
- Know how to mentor and be a mentee.
- Strengthen team building and meeting management skills.
- Know how to be an effective communicator.
- Know negotiation and how to resolve conflict in the workplace.
- Understand individual strengthens and weaknesses and how to use an Individual Development Plan to set goals.
- Understand the principles of followership and your personal responsibility to support leadership as well as your peers.
- Understand ethics and how to deal with ethical situations.
- Learn project management.
Eligibility

To preclude high cancellation/substitution rates, please check calendars and submit ETRs with full intent to attend the requested session.
Costs are paid by Coast Guard Headquarters (AFC 56 "C" school account).
Selection Procedures
Selected individuals will be notified by record message traffic of their selection. Alternates will be selected and will attend the program in the event a primary candidate cannot attend.
