DESCRIPTION: Training Center Yorktown is located 2 miles northeast of Yorktown, Virginia, along the York River. Historic and recreational areas of Yorktown, Jamestown, Williamsburg, Busch Gardens and Water Country USA, are nearby. Morale, Well-Being, and Recreation (MWR) facilities/activities on the installation include: Gym/Pool complex, Tennis & Racquetball courts, Weight Rooms, Volleyball, Athletic Fields, Tours & Tickets Office, Equipment Rental with Outdoor Adventures Program, Outdoor Pavilion, Temporary Lodging, Movie Theater, Cyber Café, and two Food and Beverage Facilities. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:Training Center Yorktown seeks interns with emphasis in abilities to gain experience in conducting intramural sports competitions, outdoor recreation programs, special events and aquatics (highly recommended that students be lifeguard certified if they want to work in aquatics). Opportunities exist in all facilities/programs listed above. Must be a student in good standing pursuing an undergraduate/graduate degree in Recreation or other MWR-related field and identified as such by an institution of higher learning having an affiliation agreement with the Coast Guard.
SUPERVISOR/MENTOR QUALIFICATIONS:Mr. Jeff Wapner has over 16 years Recreation Management, 13 years directly in the MWR Program. He received his education from St. Leo University where he majored in Business with a minor in Management, and graduated "Cum Laude." During his experience with MWR, he has held a variety of positions including Recreation Specialist, Sports Specialist, Director of Outdoor Recreation, with duties in the Commercial Sponsorship and Marketing Programs. Mr. Wapner is currently a member of International Military Community Executives Association (IMCEA) as well as Certified Park and Recreation Professional (CPRP) through the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA). He was a recipient IMCEA Roy C. Olson Memorial Award in 2009 and the AFRS John Pat Harden Practitioner Award in 2004.
HOUSING:Housing will be provided, two students per room, for students outside the commuting area. Students will coordinate housing with the Yorktown MWR Director once accepted at that location.
MEALS:Interns will be issued a meal pass for the galley that serves 3 meals per day. Interns will coordinate meal times with the Yorktown MWR Director once accepted at that location.
PAY: Paid internships are available for graduate level MBA students at TRACEN Yorktown and the Community Services Command. Other internship experiences are unpaid.
TRAVEL:Travel to and from the internship is the responsibility of the student. Arrangements may be made for pick up at the airport, if necessary, by contacting the Yorktown MWR Director prior to arrival. Contact information will be provided to you once selected for the internship. It is highly recommended that you drive in order to have transportation in the surrounding area for personal evening and weekend purposes.
AVAILABILITY: Two intern positions are open for 12 to 16 weeks in duration (depending on school requirements), May through September only. (Note: There is no requirement to join the Coast Guard, these are civilian positions).
