DESCRIPTION: U. S. Coast Guard Base Miami Beach MWR is located beside MacArthur Causeway in Miami Beach. This location has a fitness center, racquetball courts, pool, multi-purpose recreation court, discounted amusement tickets operation, and the all hands food and beverage operation - the “Gator Den.” The Marathon Recreational Lodging, cottages and recreational vehicle (RV) pads, is located on Vaca Key in the heart of the Florida Keys 111 miles Southwest of Miami and 48 miles northeast of Key West. The recreation facilities include four, 1-bedroom cottages and four RV pads. Reservations for the cottages and RV pads are coordinated through Miami. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Miami seeks interns with the desire to gain experience in programming and operation in any/all of the above facilities, accounting, computer, advertising, marketing, web page assistance. There is ample opportunity to organize sporting events and leagues, golf tournaments, and development of tickets and tours operations. Must be a student in good standing pursuing an undergraduate/graduate degree in recreation or other MWR-related field and identified as such by an institution of higher learning having an affiliation agreement with the Coast Guard.
SUPERVISOR/MENTOR QUALIFICATIONS: Mr. Malloy has over 25 years of Food and Beverage experience and over 20 years in MWR. He serves as the Regional MWR Director in Miami, Florida. During his 14 years working for the Army MWR Program, Mr. Malloy served in a wide range of positions from Chief, Business and Recreation to MWR Director of Operation Joint Forge where he deployed on 6 different occasions in support of Military operations in Bosnia-Herzegovina. He began with the Coast Guard MWR in 2008, recently earned his Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certification, and is currently a member of the International Military Community Executive Association (IMCEA).
HOUSING: Housing will be provided. Students will coordinate housing with the Miami MWR Director once accepted at that location.
MEALS: Meals will be provided in the galley that serves 2 meals per day. Interns will coordinate meal times with the Miami MWR Director once accepted at that location.
PAY: No pay, this is a volunteer internship.
TRAVEL: Travel to and from the internship is the responsibility of the student. Arrangements may be made for pick up at the airport, if required, by contacting Miami MWR Director prior to arrival. Contact information will be provided once selected for the internship. Due to internship requirements and the ability to explore the nearby area during off time, it is recommended to provide a personal vehicle for this internship location.
AVAILABILITY: Intern positions may be open for 12 to 16 weeks in duration, (depending on school requirements) on a year-round basis..
