Basic Continuing Education Requirements

  1. National Registry is the governing body through which we maintain our Coast Guard required EMT credentialing. CPR is not part of EMT Recertification, it's actually a pre-requisite to attend a recertification course. It is the member’s responsibility to maintain his/her CPR card. Historically we have offered CPR recertification as part of our 5-day RECERT; however since we have switched to the core-24 hr 3-day course we do not have the allotted time nor the resources to include the CPR course. Students may purchase the online CPR course and then demonstrate their skills to an instructor while at EMT School. The alternative is to stay an additional day to attend a 4hr CPR course, In addition we are offer EMT Instructor courses periodically. Another option is to check with your local Medical Clinic, a large contingency of Health Service Technicians have been trained as CPR Instructors. If you have any additional questions regarding NREMT recertification, please see their website.

  2. The 48 hours of additional Continuing Medical Education (CME) may be satisfied by submission of equivalency cards or certificates for other courses and programs taught and/or a statement from the instructor's supervisor outlining the dates, topical content and hours of qualifying programs taught by the individual. Any program or course which qualifies for Section II credit for the students enrolled will qualify the instructor for the same hour-for-hour credit. Basic Refresher courses taught above the minimum required in Section I may be claimed toward Section II. A maximum of 12 hours will be accepted for CPR courses taught beyond the requirements outlined above. Questions relative to the awarding of re-registration credit for instructional activities should be addressed to the National Registry office.

  3. In accordance with COMDTINST 5270.2 and COMDTINST M1500.10C, the Coast Guard’s Training Management Tool (TMT) is the preferred location for recording individual and unit training. Members should provide documentation of any training completed to their unit Training Officer or Training Petty Officer for recording in TMT.
  4. Each member is responsible for providing documentation of all CME to NREMT. This can be easily accomplished by logging onto the NREMT website, or by downloading the recertification application from NREMT.

  5. For members without access to TMT, or who are otherwise required to maintain hard-copy training records, all CME will be recorded on CG 5550 Emergency Medical Technician Record of Continuing Education. Such entry will normally be made by the Unit Liaison for EMS, but may be performed by other members as designated by the CO/OINC. Local reproduction is authorized. The CG 5550 will be filed in the member’s Training Record. The current year’s CG5550 and the CG5550 for the previous year will be retained.
