GETTING STARTED ON COLLEGE

DEGREE PLANS

To get a general idea of how many courses in various subjects are required to earn a degree, go to the degree descriptions page of this web site.

For more details, though, you'll want to look at a degree plan.  Degree plans neatly lay out all the courses you must successfully complete to earn a specific degree.  Depending on how they're displayed, degree plans also show which of the required courses you've already completed.  By knowing which courses you have to take and which you've already completed, you know which you still have to pass and, therefore, how far you are from earning your degree.

DANTES & SOC Codes

When you receive your degree plans from the Coast Guard Institute, you'll likely notice underneath a course title something like this:

{DANTES Code = 04.01.07}

These numbers (DANTES codes) correspond to a specific academic subject.  For example, courses with the DANTES Code 04.01.07 are all on the subject of “Public Relations” while courses with the DANTES Code 14.02.01 are all “Business Mathematics” courses.

These codes are on your degree plan to give you an idea of which types of courses you can take to fulfill the course requirement listed on your degree plan.  And if you happen to be getting your degree from a school that’s a member of the Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges (SOC), including SOCCOAST, you can use this DANTES code number to find out what specific courses at other SOC schools you can take to fulfill that requirement.

You can find lists of what courses these codes correspond to on DANTES’s web site.  You can find all the DANTES codes are listed at the DANTES web site. And a list that converts DANTES codes to SOC codes is on another DANTES web page.
