There are hundreds of accredited colleges and universities in the United States. Unfortunately, ESOs are prohibited from recommending one over another or steering you toward one or away from another.

Except for those marked with an asterisk (*), all colleges and universities in the table immediately below are members of Servicemembers' Opportunity Colleges (SOC), Coast Guard – an association of colleges and universities created to make it easier for military personnel to pursue college degree programs. The non-SOC schools listed have established good reputations with military personnel. The schools listed in italics are for-profit institutions. |
All of these schools have distance learning programs.
The fact that some schools are listed and others aren't should not be taken as indicating schools not listed are inferior to those which are listed.
In the lists above,
(B) indicates it awards bachelor's degrees;
(M) indicates it awards master's degrees; and
(D) indicates that it awards doctoral degrees.
The following schools are just a few of many regionally-accredited colleges and universities which have self-paced degree programs.
All of these programs allow you to start a course at any time – there are no fixed deadlines for registering, completing lessons, taking tests, or even finishing a course. You can register at any time of the year and work at your own pace. Some schools require you to complete their courses in four months, but many allow up to nine months, and a few give you a year or even two years. Those with shorter time frames grant extensions. On the other hand, most allow you to complete them in as little as six weeks.
Needless to say, courses from these programs are especially advantageous if your schedule is unpredictable.
An added benefit of these programs is that in most cases tuition is lower than the maximum tuition assistance will cover. (The lower the tuition, the more courses per year you can take using tuition assistance.)
