In addition to advanced education programs (which are available to eligible military and civilian Coast Guard personnel), there are also many continuing education and training courses available through the institutions listed below.
SkillPort enables the Coast Guard to maximize business performance through a combination of comprehensive e-learning content, online information resources, flexible learning technologies and support services. To log in and check it out, go to the CGPortal, then click on the "Training & Education" button on the blue bar, after which click on "Skillport" on the menu at the left side of the screen. At the bottom of the right-hand box on the "SIGN-ON TO SKILLPORT" screen, you'll see "SkillPort" and a small logo that says "SINGLE SIGN-ON" next to it.
NKO (as the name implies) is a Navy web site. It has all kinds of information available free to Coast Guard (as well as Navy and Marine Corps) personnel.
In addition to the "Career Management" tab (which is almost exclusively useful to Navy and Marine Corps personnel), "Personal Development", "Leadership", "Learning", and "Reference" tabs. Each of these has a great many other links to information that's totally free – almost all of which is applicable to anyone.
The Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) is dedicated to providing high quality training to all public safety organizations. FLETC’s resident training has provided the knowledge and skills needed to protect our democratic institutions and preserve law and order. Now, the FLETC Virtual Campus provides this same consistent, high quality training anytime, anywhere -- via the Internet. This approach allows public safety professionals the ability to access training resources that may not be available to them, otherwise.
The Emergency Management Institute (EMI) is part of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and provides a nationwide training program of resident and nonresident courses to enhance U.S. emergency management practices.
The Graduate School, according to its web site, is "an active learning community with a rich history that spans nine decades. Our range of programs and services includes continuing education, academic programs, career development and certificate programs--all designed to serve the needs of organizations and individuals in both government and the private sector."
Dozens of renowned colleges and universities in the U.S. and overseas have made courses available to the general public at no charge. In addition, there are many other excellent courses and study aids available on-line for free.
