Thomas Edison State College (TESC)
offers 21 examinations that allow you to earn college credit
without taking formal courses. These examinations, known as
TECEP exams,
are specifically designed to permit you to demonstrate college-level
knowledge you have gained through work, personal interests, or independent
study by taking a single examination.
Although each TECEP examination corresponds to a course offered by Thomas
Edison State College, they are available to anyone who is interested in
earning college credit-by-examination. That is, you don't have to be a
student at TESC or be registered for the corresponding course to take a
TECEP exam. However, if you're getting your
degree from another college or university, you should check with your
counselor to make sure the TECEP exam you plan to take will count toward
your degree requirements.
TECEP examinations are available in a wide range of business and liberal
arts subjects, such as psychology, management, English composition, and
marketing. Through each exam you can earn three credits; you can earn
upper-level credit via some of them. Unlike the CLEP tests, DSST
exams, and ECEs, you must pay for TECEP exams (currently $80/credit).
Unfortunately, TECEP exams are not covered by tuition assistance, although
you can use GI Bill benefits.
Like other test-for-credit programs, TECEP examinations are aimed at highly
independent learners who have the ability to study in a non-structured
environment, without assignments or assignment deadlines, and without formal
guidance.
Each TECEP exam has its own test description (click on links below) which includes an outline of topics covered on the test, textbooks you should study from to prepare for the exam, and sample questions. Using the test description, you can study at your own pace and register to take the exam when you feel ready. TESC's web site also has a page describing how to prepare for a TECEP.
