The following few links
are just examples of the thousands of scholarships available to anyone willing to dig for
them. This list is NOT definitive.
Talbots Women's
Scholarship Fund
The Talbots Charitable
Foundation, through its Talbots Women's Scholarship Fund, awards $200,000 in
scholarships to women. Seventeen women are each
awarded $10,000 scholarships, and one will receive a $30,000 scholarship.
Applicants to the 2012 Talbots Scholarship Program must:
Hurston/Wright Award for College Writers
The Hurston/Richard Wright Award™ for College
Writers honors excellence in fiction writing by students of African descent
enrolled full time as undergraduate or graduate students in any college or
university in the United States.
The Gates Millennium Scholarship Program
This program, funded by a
grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, provides outstanding low
income minority students with an opportunity to complete an undergraduate
college education in any discipline area of interest. Continuing scholars
may request funding for a graduate degree program in one of the following
discipline areas: education, engineering, library science, mathematics,
public health or science.
The Do Something Awards
Five winners will receive
a minimum of $10,000 in community grants and
scholarships (if applicable). Of those five winners, 1
will be selected as the grand prize Do Something Award
winner. That grand prize Do Something Award winner
receives a total of $100,000 in community grants.
Jesse Brown Memorial Youth Scholarship Program
These scholarships (in
amounts of $5,000 and more) are awarded to any volunteer
who is age 21 or younger and has volunteered for a
minimum of 100 hours at a VA medical center during the
previous calendar year. All volunteer hours must be
credited to the Disabled American Veterans.
Samuel Huntington Public Service Award
This award of $10,000 is for pursuing public service anywhere in the world
for a period of one year before going on to graduate school or a career.
FEEA
scholarships of $500 to $5,000 are available only to civilian federal and
postal employees and their families.
Community Responsibility Scholars are chosen
based on a combination of the three central foundations of an Antioch
education: academic engagement, community involvement, and meaningful work
experiences. The amount of the scholarship is $18,000.
Fulbright Grant Program
Sponsored by the US
Department of State, the Fulbright Program is the
largest U.S. international exchange program offering
opportunities for students, scholars, and professionals
to undertake international graduate study, advanced
research, university teaching, and teaching in
elementary and secondary schools worldwide. Grants
are valued at between $40,000 and $60,000.
Youth Action Net
Each year, YouthActionNet selects 20 young social
entrepreneurs to participate in its Global Fellowship
Program. These accomplished young leaders are
distinguished by their records for success in achieving
positive change in their communities, by their
innovative approaches, and by their ability to mobilize
their peers and community members in support of their
social change visions. Awards are for $500 and
more.
Scholarship Search Engines
To find scholarships
other than these, you can thumb through the books and booklets available
through your ESO or local public and college libraries, or you can use any of the many
scholarship search engines available on-line. Here are some official and

There are also many
commercial web sites for scholarship search engines to make finding
scholarships you qualify for easier. Although you have to pay no money to
use these search engines, you will often have to register (i.e., provide
your name and contact information) before you can use the site.

scholarships according to various criteria, such as individual schools'
names or the applicant's ethnicity or race.
A few of these
sites, produced by individuals, don't even have names.
And some are combination
sites, providing information, links to search engines, and links to sites of
specific scholarships sorted by eligibility criteria.
