SkillPort

SkillPort is the Coast Guard's portal to an on-line course provider the Coast Guard has contracted with.  More than 700 Internet-based courses available free to uniformed personnel (regular and Reserve), their dependents, civilian civil service employees, and Auxiliarists, including 130 courses directly related to the Coast Guard's Leadership Competencies.  You can work on a SkillPort course 24-hours a day, and – if you're running into difficulties or have a specific question the program doesn't seem to answer – you also have 24-hour access to real-time support.  Content is personalized to suit your needs.

To log in and check it out, go to the CGPortal, then click on the "Training & Education" button on the blue bar, after which click on "Skillport" on the menu at the left side of the screen.  At the bottom of the right-hand box on the "SIGN-ON TO SKILLPORT" screen, you'll see "SkillPort" and a small logo that says "SINGLE SIGN-ON" next to it.

Also available through SkillPort is "Books 24x7" – hundreds of books in three general collections: Business Professional, IT Professional, and Office Essentials.

  • The BusinessPro collection provides instant guidance on a range of practical topics that drive business results. Topics range from leadership to writing business plans and from interviewing skills to project management.

  • The ITPro collection was designed by and for IT professionals who need to keep pace with the accelerating speed of technology and innovation. With thousands of books, ITPro provides both broad and deep coverage of over 100 different technology topics including the latest programming languages, coding methodologies, network security, telecom protocols, and IT asset management strategies to name just a few.

  • The OfficeEssentials collection provides fingertip access to the latest information on standard office software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and more in plain, easy-to-understand language.

Contractors may access reference materials provided in "Books 24x7", but only as they relate to Coast Guard-related work.

College Credit for Some SkillPort Courses

If the course has been evaluated by the American Council on Education (ACE), you can earn college credits from it.  To do so, you have to take the certification exam associated with the course, which your ESO must proctor.  If you pass, you and your ESO complete the "SkillSoft College Credit Verification Form" (CGI-1567).

Your ESO then submits the form and the official score report you get when you complete the test to the Coast Guard Institute.  The Institute then forwards them to ACE.  Once ACE notifies the Institute that the course has been evaluated and how many credits you earned from it, that information can be put on your Coast Guard transcript.

As with all ACE and other non-traditional credits, however, remember that every college and university decides whether to accept them toward their majors and degrees.
