The Helmets to Hardhats (H2H) Program works with top contractors and unions to give you free assistance and access to career-making slots in the construction industry.  The congressionally-funded, one-of-a-kind program is administered by a non-profit trust, and connects National Guard, Reserve, and transitioning active duty members with meaningful work, good pay, and a sense of community in the building trades.

The H2H interactive web-based education and registration program lists thousands of career opportunities with such unions as the Boilermakers, Ironworkers, Insulators, Roofers, and 11 others.  More than 15,000 candidates have registered on the web site.  Many of these accepted, or are now in the process of qualifying for, careers as steelworkers, plumbers and pipefitters, cement masons, carpenters, electricians, sheet metal workers, and other construction trades.

Helmets to Hardhats offers job packages and, depending on the skill required for the trade, hundreds of hours of classroom training for apprentices and from 4,000 to 8,000 hours of on-the-job training (OJT) with mentoring by experienced journeymen.  A union apprentice receives a percentage of a journeyman’s wage and full benefits: pension, medical, training, and more.  A Helmets to Hardhats candidate receives all that, plus Montgomery GI Bill funds, if eligible.

Many candidates receive college credit for the courses they take during an apprenticeship. Many apprentices complete their general education courses and receive associate degrees in their trades.

You can register at the H2H web site, submit your résumé, and fill out a series of questionnaires related to your skills, experience, interests, and part of the country you want to work in.  You can then browse the database of careers and specific jobs.  Or you can let the computer match jobs best suited to you and the part of the country you want to work in.  You can also ask to be notified when jobs that fit your interests are posted.  Through H2H's web site, you can also apply for jobs that interest you.

Also at H2H's web site you can read and get answers to some frequently asked questions about the organization and how it can help you obtain a well-paying job.
