COMMAND INFORMATION

RELIGIOUS PROGRAM

On November 28, 1775, the second article of Navy Regulations was adopted.  In its statement, it included that "the Commanders of the ships of the thirteen United Colonies are to take care that divine services be performed twice a day on board and a sermon preached on Sundays, unless bad weather or other extraordinary accidents prevent."  'Although chaplains were not specifically mentioned in this article, one can imply that Congress intended that an ordained clergyman be part of ship's company.  Later documents support that conclusion.' derived from a summary of Lt. Margaret G. Kibben, CHC, USNR, on US Navy Chaplain Corps web site.

According to nautical tradition, a prayer is spoken aboard a naval vessel just prior to taps, relayed over the ship's intercom by the Chaplain.  At our base, in line with our mission of training USCG shipmates, the tradition is continued by the religious petty officers in seaman recruit company squad bays. derived from USCG Religious Petty Officers Instructions Sheet.

"As the smallest of the nations' Armed Forces, the Coast Guard has no Chaplains of its own and so they are provided by the US Navy Chaplain Corps."  derived from TRACEN Petaluma Services 'Chapel:  About the Chaplains' web site'  They fill US Coast Guard billets; and the US Coast Guard compensates the US Navy for their duty at our bases.

Among our roles on base are the following services:
