2008/2009 Coast
Guard and Army Corps of Engineers
beach nourishment project
The Army Corps of Engineers accomplished the 2008/2009 cycle of beach
nourishment using trucked-in sand harvested from an upland borrow pit. In
the past, the Army Corps of Engineers used dredges to pump sand from
off-shore borrow pits directly onto Training Center Cape May and City of
Cape May beaches. This time they used trucks. The first truck arrived at the
training center on Dec. 12, 2008 and the last truck on Feb. 26, 2009. During
this time 12,353 dump trucks delivered 315,471 tons of sand to our beach to
restore the eroded shoreline and protect training center property. In the
2006/2007 cycle, the training center received 126,377 cubic yards of sand.
During this cycle the training center received 242,000 cubic yards.
The Coast Guard contribution was $1.2 million, The Army Corps of Engineers
contribution was $4.2 million.
