THE COMMANDANT OF THE UNITED
STATES COAST GUARD
The Commandant of the Coast Guard takes pleasure in presenting the COAST GUARD UNIT COMMENDATION to:
USCGC TAMAROA (WMEC 166)
NEW YORK, NEW YORK
for service as set forth in the following
"For meritorious service during the period 29 May 1979 through 27 June 1979 while operating under the command of Commander, Coast Guard Group New York in support of sanitation barge movement for the State of New Jersey. After exhausting all commercial resources, the State of New Jersey appealed to the Coast Guard for help in moving sewage sludge barges from the processing / loading sites to sea for dumping. TAMAROA, being the only Third District tug of suitable size to tow these 8000 ton barges, was recalled early from patrol and CHOPPED to Group New York. After surveying the barges, the Captain and crew of TAMAROA fabricated the necessary towing gear, obtained additional towing hawser and on 4 June commenced towing these large barges. With the loss of weight due to removal of her towing engine, TAMAROA tended to be quite difficult to maneuver in a towing situation. Despite this handicap and the fact that the thirty-five year old main plant and ship in general were not normally subjected to the strain of towing, the Captain and crew of TAMAROA devised methods and procedures which allowed them to safely and expeditiously execute their assigned mission. TAMAROA continued to haul an average of three barges a week for the duration of the strike. The professionalism and resourcefulness displayed by the personnel of TAMAROA drew praise not only from Coast Guard and New Jersey officials but also from members of the local maritime community, and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Coast Guard."
The Operational Distinguishing Device is authorized.
All personnel attached to and serving on board USCGC TAMAROA during the above designated period are hereby authorized to wear the Coast Guard Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon.
For the Commandant,
R. I. PRICE
Vice Admiral, U.S. Coast Guard
