A Coast Guard Career

BMC-L Ira Lewis's Scrapbook, Second Section:

Training Exercises and Equipment

Coast Guard Small Boat Training

Smiths Point Training Station, 1943-45.

"Through the surf / capsize" drills & instruction.  There were five classes (five boats with one instructor and an 8-man crew per boat).  Classes started in April and ran 6-8 weeks.  Rowing was taught first, then navigating the boat through the surf - and lastly, "righting" a boat that had turned over.
