Smiths Point Training Station, 1943-45.
"Through the surf / capsize" drills & instruction. There were five classes (five boats with one instructor and an 8-man crew per boat). Classes started in April and ran 6-8 weeks. Rowing was taught first, then navigating the boat through the surf - and lastly, "righting" a boat that had turned over.
