U.S. Coast Guard Maritime Enforcement Assignments
CWO Jimmy Workman, Assignment Officer |
Assignment Officer's Hot Word:
Updated 12 December 12
Assignment Year 2013 is upon us and I’m in the process of slating. For those
members tour complete in AY13 you should already have a current E-Resume in
DA. If you do not and or you are confused as to if you should have put in an
E-Resume PLEASE contact me ASAP.
It’s like “Ground Hog Day” here in my office and every day I receive many
questions about Extensions and “re-tours” at the same unit.
Extensions are a possibility but you must still earn that Extension.
Remember that you MUST have a Command endorsement for an extension
request. Re-tours on the other
hand are not normally approved.
They will however be considered on a case by case basis. You would need a
strong Command endorsement for this to be considered as well.
Speaking of
Command endorsements; members applying for LEDET positions and or a MLE/FP
positions in the Deployable Special Forces Community, MUST follow the
instructions outlined in COMDTINST M1000.8 (1.C.12. Assignment to a Law
Enforcement Detachment (LEDET) Duty). If you did not you have already
disqualified yourself for assignment.
This is not anything new for assignment to LEDET Duty and should not
be a surprise. For MSRT and MSST assignment; it’s on its second year of
screening (See ALCOAST 558/11). MBR applying for a DSF assignment will be
selected by the unit Command applied for not me the Assignment officer. The
way the selection process works is once all E-resumes are in I go through
them to ensure there is a CMD endorsement as per the INST.
Your name will be sent to the DSF unit you applied for, if you
applied for multiple DSF units your name is sent to all of them.
So the units receive a list of names of every MBR applying for their
positions. The unit will screen the MBR and send me a ranked ordered list of
every MBR they have selected. Now just because you were selected doesn’t
mean you will automatically get that position.
I have only so many DSF positions to fill; there will be more of you
applying and selected than I have jobs available. So all 14 assignment
factors must be applied in order to determine who gets the position.
ORDERS; I do not expect to start cutting orders until FEB13. So please do
not call asking where you are going as this will only delay the process. To
make the assignment process fair for everyone I can't start slating until
the DSF Screening is over. When I do start cutting orders I do not go by
priority. You will be slated
according to your priority and orders will be cut all at once.
SPECIAL ASSIGNMENTS; we aren’t there yet. Now Assignment Officers do not and
will not make promises to you when it comes to your assignment, but I
promise you that I am doing everything I can to make Special Assignments an
opportunity for the ME rating. We still have MBRs in their legacy rated
position; that should be fixed this assignment year. But keep in mind that
we are still new and growing; there are purposed new positions coming on
line that may cause us to continue to have this situation for a while, so
STBY to STBY. If our strength in
numbers are great and all goes as planned we should be able to open up our
rating to Special Assignments in AY14. I’m a firm believer that there should
be ME’s as Recruiters, Company Commanders, ect.
What better advertisement for our rating with MBR’s in these
positions?
I
know everyone has seen the advancement messages and can see that ME rating
is tightening up. That’s no reason to panic and put in a change in rate back
to your legacy rating. They are in the same boat as us and most likely not
able to take you back. I've said it before and I'll say it again; to prevent
falling behind, you should be taking the SWE. I encourage everyone to
perform to their highest ability every day and to compete towards
advancement at every assignment. If you have other ME’s nearby attempt to
get together and form a study group. These groups not only help you learn
but provide a jump start on building your network. As you advance, you will
see that networking with your fellow ME’s is extremely valuable. We are on
our 3rd year with the ME rating and I think everyone knows by now we aren’t
just gun slinging door kickers. We took on many other rolls (Police, VBST,
Stations, Cutters, Marine Safety Units, Trainers, MAA) so well round
yourself and STUDY, STUDY, STUDY.
As
always I am available for your questions and concerns. The best way to
contact me is via email; It’s a busy time of the year for me so don’t be
alarmed if I don’t respond right away but I will respond. As your Assignment
Officer you are my #1 PRIORITY.
Stay safe out there and take care of each other.
