AIRMAN PROGRAM
Aviation Candidates receive orders to an Air Station to begin part 1 (Airman
Program), this consist of a comprehensive OJT program based on the Airman
Handbook and syllabus, and a math pretest. The program last 4 months.
Candidates receive PCS orders to the nearest Air Station where an AN vacancy
exist. This may not be the closest to your current unit. PCS-TEMDUINS orders
are issued to single personnel to attend the resident portion of A school in
Elizabeth City, NC. Married personnel receive TDY orders to the school. This
is due to the limited housing in the area for the short period of time
(16-20 weeks).
Once at ATTC resident training, you must compete with your class for your
next assignment (PO3). Based on projected vacancies in the field a list of
positions are given to the School Chief and selections are made based on
academic standing (#1 in the class picks first, then #2, etc). If you are
there TDY, you return to the unit where you completed your AN program to
pack and pickup your family, then report to your next duty station.
All Aviation candidates must be able to swim a required, 75yrds and tread
water for 2 minutes as per the AIROPS Manual (COMDINST M3710 series).
AST APPLICANTS
All applicants must submit a completed Physical Fitness Test
screening sheet, before they are eligible for orders to the Airman Program.
If you have not submitted your screening sheet you will have a PFT
code added to your name on the AST School list.
During the first week of the Airman Program, if you fail to satisfactorily complete the required physical fitness test, you will be disenrolled from the Airman Program and sent back to the field where you will have to re-apply for another A School.
The washout rate for AST candidates is very high, greater than 70% failure. If you prepare yourself with the information provided in the (AST Airman Syllabus Part II) your transition into the AST rate will be much easier.
