Frankfort is located in a very picturesque part of Lake Michigan, just a few miles south of Point Betsie. The new station itself was just built and moved into June of 2004, but there has been a Coast Guard presence here dating back to the Life Saving Service for over 100 years.
The primary duties at Station Frankfort are Search and Rescue, Maritime Law Enforcement, and Homeland Security. We are a Multi-Mission Station, however, so any and all missions pertaining to the area are conducted here. There are presently 16 active duty personnel here and four Reserves. There is no Auxiliary in Frankfort.
The best thing about Frankfort is that it is a sportsman's paradise. The"Norman Rockwell" type atmosphere makes it a suitable destination for anyone who wants to spend some time in a quiet place with beautiful surroundings.
During the summer, the population explodes with the numerous tourists and dual residents returning from Florida. The fall brings excellent salmon fishing in the rivers and bays. Just 15 minutes away is Crystal Mountain ski resort. This is the best ski hill in Michigan, and along with the ice fishing and snow mobiling, there is ample opportunity to get out during those long winter days. With spring comes some of the best Morel mushroom hunting around. These mushrooms are famous throughout the region and many people travel here from other states just to hike through the woods and pick them.
If you would like to come up for a taste of Frankfort, there is a cottage at Point Betsie available to Coast Guard Personnel for rental (for more information on the cottage, click the Point Betsie link on the website). There are many other things to do and see. The Benzie County Chamber of Commerce website www.benzie.com has an extensive listing of area attractions and events. They can also be contacted by calling 1-800-882-5801.
