Mission:

SFO Grand Haven carries on the Coast Guard's Proud tradition of mission exellence in eastern Lake Michigan. The unit's primary responsibilities are logistics, prevention, and response. Logistically we provide engineering, weapons, and medical support of the nine USCG small boat stations along the east side of Lake Michigan, located in Charlevoix, Frankfort, Manistee, Ludington, Muskegon, Grand Haven, Holland, St. Joseph and Michigan City (Indiana). Prevention responsibilities include vessel and facility inspections and investigations of marine casualties that occur along the west coast of the state of Michigan. The same Prevention personnel also carry out pollution response and interagency coordination.  A small Response Detachment evaluates the proficiency of the supported Stations to ensure they are ready for operations. SFO Grand Haven is a subordinate unit of USCG Sector Lake Michigan.

Grand Haven:

In Grand Haven, the Coast Guard History is displayed in grand style. Although there are several towns in the U.S that have been named Coast Guard Cities, there is only one official "Coast Guard City USA" and that distinction belongs solely to Grand Haven. Grand Haven holds a spectacular annual festival for the Coast Guard which is the home of the Coast Guard's National Memorial Service that honors fallen members of the service. The Coast Guard Festival is one of the largest festivals in Western Michigan, attracting around 300,000 people each year. The fireworks show on the first Saturday is August has a well-earned reputation as one of the best in the nation. The Coast Guard Festival is a "can’t miss" event – you’ll never feel more proud of being associated with the Coast Guard.

The unit is located in the magnificent former site of the Grand Haven Board of Light and Power, along the boardwalk to one of the most photographed lighthouses in the country.
