Commander Steven B. Lowe

Commander Lowe enlisted in the Coast Guard in 1987 and after basic training reported to the CGC POLAR SEA in Seattle, Washington. He completed Sonar Technician “A” School in 1989 and was assigned to both the CGC MIDGETT and CGC BOUTWELL in Alameda, California. His next assignment was LEDET Key West. During this tour he deployed to Bahrain, Qatar and Saudi Arabia as a member of the tactical law enforcement training team and also enforced UN sanctions against Iraq in the Northern Red Sea. While assigned to the LEDET, he was promoted to First Class Petty Officer.
CDR Lowe
graduated from Officer Candidate School in 1993 and was assigned to the CGC
SHERMAN where he served as Electrical Officer and Damage Control Assistant. He reported to Marine Safety Office New
Orleans in 1995, qualified as a senior marine inspector and was Supervisor of
the Harvey Canal Inspection Detail. CDR
Lowe’s next assignment was MSO Portland, Maine where he was Chief of Fishing
Vessel Safety, Assistant Chief of Inspections and after 9-11, Chief of Homeland
Security Planning. In 2002 he became one
of the first members of NORTHCOM. In
2004 he was assigned as Executive Officer of MSO Milwaukee and then Chief of
Prevention for Sector Lake Michigan. In
2006 he became Commanding Officer of Sector Field Office Grand Haven. After attending the Naval War College CDR
Lowe was the Coast Guard Liaison to the Office of Policy Development at
DHS. Following the Deepwater Horizon
incident in 2010 he served as Deputy Staff Director for the National Incident
Command and then in the Deepwater Horizon Action Office at Coast Guard
Headquarters. CDR Lowe reported to Sector Sault Sainte Marie as the Deputy Sector Commander in June 2011.
CDR
Lowe received a BA in Sociology from Old Dominion University and a Master’s
Degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War
College. He has earned both the
permanent cutterman's pin and marine safety insignia. His personal awards include two Joint Service
Commendation Medals, the 9-11 Medal, the Southwest Asia Service Medal and the
Kuwait Liberation Medal.
