Local Information Page

A glacial retreat 10,000 years ago left behind the greatest body of inland lakes in the world, the US Great Lakes.

Superior, the largest of these lakes, is connected to the other lakes via the 60-mile long St. Mary's River.  Sault Sainte Marie, Michigan is located at the head of the St. Mary's river and is home to the world-famous Soo locks in the heart of Michigan's vacationland.

Shipping is considered a major priority on the St. Mary's River, and managing the travel of this river "highway" is a critical job for the men and women at Coast Guard Sector Sault.   We strive for excellent mission execution and are dedicated to equal, fair and respectful treatment of all our members of team Coast Guard.

Sault Sainte Marie is well known for the great outdoors. With it's wide variety of hunting, fishing, snowmobiling and more, it's a great place to become a part of a club or organization.  If you are interested in checking out some local groups please contact Sault area Chamber of Commerce at (906) 632-3301.

Sault Sainte Marie, Michigan is neighbored by our friendly  Canadian border. The international bridge, spanning two miles over the locks, connects Sault Sainte Marie, Michigan to Sault Sainte Marie, Ontario. Please check with customs and border protection to find out proper identification needed to cross the border. Sector Sault is dedicated to making your move to the upper peninsula of Michigan as smooth and rewarding as possible.
