Chaplain Sunny Mitchell, LCDR, USN
LCDR Sunny Mitchell is the command chaplain for Sector Lake Michigan and Sector Sault Ste Marie. A native of Virginia, Chaplain Mitchell is an ordained Baptist Minister and is endorsed by the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship (CBF) and has served on Active Duty for nine years.
LCDR Mitchell graduated from Radford University with a B.S. in Communications and minor in Religion in 1999. She received her MDiv from McAfee School of Theology at Mercer University in Atlanta, GA. She is now pursing her DMin at Fuller Theological Seminary.
In 2003, Chaplain Mitchell graduated from the Basic Course at Naval Chaplain School in Newport, Rhode Island, and came on active duty in October 2004 where she was assigned to the Chapel at Commander Fleet Activities Sasebo (CFAS) in Sasebo, Japan. In January 2007 LT Mitchell reported to Combat Logistics Regiment 17 (CLR-17) at 1st Marine Logistics Group (1 MLG) in Camp Pendleton, CA. In January 2008 deployed with the 15th MEU(SOC) to the Middle East. Upon arriving back at Camp Pendleton in December 2008 LCDR Mitchell served as the Training and Operations Chaplain at 1st MLG; she also proudly fought for Camp Pendleton’s Mixed Martial Arts Team. In the spring of 2009 Chaplain Mitchell deployed again on as an IA (Individual Augmentee) to Expeditionary Medical Facility in Kuwait (EMFK) where she served as Command Chaplain. In March of 2009 LCDR Mitchell reported onboard USS GEORGE H.W. BUSH (CVN-77) out of Norfolk, VA where she completed its first combat deployment from May-Nov 2011. LCDR Mitchell reported to Sector Lake Michigan and Sector Sault Ste. Marie in January 2012.
Chaplain Mitchell’s personal awards include the Navy Achievement Medal and the Navy Commendation Medal.
