DERAILMANT OF 10 EMPTY CAR CONTAINERS INTO THE
SANDUSKY BAY ON WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 30, 2008
At
approximately 0445 on
Wednesday, January 30,
2008, a train derailed on the
Norfolk and Southern Bridge
in Sandusky Bay, Ohio. Ten
empty car containers were
heaved into the water, leaving
180 drums of nitric acid and
trivalent chromium un-impacted
on the train cars still positioned
on the track.
Although, initially, there was a concern of HAZMAT release into the bay, further
inspection proved the absence of contamination. High winds were the cause
of the accident.
