In addition to the active duty
Coast Guard personnel at MSU Chicago, the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve and
U.S. Coast
Guard Auxiliary are invaluable members of
Team Coast Guard in the greater Chicagoland area.
U.S. Coast Guard Reserve
Reservists are an integral
part of Team Coast Guard and perform numerous functions in support of marine
safety and security missions. They are divided into two sections that typically drill up to three weekends every month, augmenting the availability and presence of Team Coast Guard to the public.
These "part-time professionals" work in every department at MSU
Chicago, providing several hours of force augmentation each month to
conduct inspections, investigations, vessel boardings, as well as stand
duty and receive training. In addition to earning several of
the USCG marine safety and security qualifications, the
Reserve component collectively holds many professional and specialty
qualifications beneficial to the Coast Guard and its missions. The
availability of these civilian skill sets, experience, and local
knowledge help increase the expertise and capacity of Team Coast
Guard to respond to both routine and non-routine incidents in the
Chicagoland area, as well as enhance our ability to handle emergency
situations that require the deployment of additional human
resources.

U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary
The United States Coast Guard
Auxiliary is a non-profit volunteer organization that supports the United States
Coast Guard and the Department of Homeland Security in its humanitarian
missions. In addition to their responsibilities to the Active-Duty Coast Guard; they
dedicate their time and offer much needed services to the citizens of the Chicagoland area by performing
complimentary vessel safety checks, safe boating classes, and much more.
The Auxiliary is founded upon four cornerstone programs:
1. Conduct Vessel
Exams - This is a service to owners of recreational boats. Qualified Vessel
Examiners determine if a boat is in compliance with Federal and State laws and
issue a decal if in
compliance with regulations.
2. Public Education -
Auxiliary Instructors trained to perform this service educate boaters in the
basic
principles of piloting, seamanship, and safety.
3. Operations - This involves surface and non-military air
operations utilizing members' facilities, (boats
& planes) in a wide variety
of patrols and search and rescue missions. Members participating in
this or any
Auxiliary program do not exercise any law enforcement authority.
4. Fellowship - This
is an important aspect in making the volunteer missions successful. At all
social
events and official

with like interests establish friendships and compatible
