Welcome to Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin
The town of Sturgeon Bay, located in Door County, WI, has a population of
just over 9,000 people. It is a seasonal resort community, with the summer
population approaching 75,000. The nearest large city is Green Bay,
approximately 1 hour's drive south. Sturgeon Bay offers a variety of
recreational opportunities throughout the year.
Wisconsin is known for it's seasonal changes. During the winter months, the temperature gets down into the 10's and 20's. The freezing temperatures make ice fishing and snow mobiling very popular winter activities. The summer brings warmer weather, generally in the 70's, with the lake breezes keeping things comfortable. With this weather, golf, fishing and boating are popular summer time activities in Sturgeon Bay.
Depending on the season, housing in Sturgeon Bay can be limited. There are several apartment complexes in town that have one or two bedroom apartments. Additionally, houses and duplex units are available for rent. Since government housing availability is dependent on the season, check with the Unit Housing Officer to see if a home is available for you and your family.
The closest military medical facility is located at the Great Lakes Training Center near Chicago. Stationed in Sturgeon Bay, you will have TRICARE Remote and use doctors in this area. Most of the crew goes to Door Country Memorial Hospital or the North Shore Medical Clinic for their medical needs. Additionally, there are several dentists, optometrists and pharmacies in the area. When you are arrive, we will work with you to get you and your family enrolled in TRICARE Remote.
Though Sturgeon Bay offers plenty of recreational activities during the summer and winter months, the YMCA is a great place to workout and play sports year round. Each crewmember has a membership at the YMCA that allows them to workout and participate in YMCA leagues. The morale fund also sponsors numerous crew teams for these leagues, including volleyball, soccer, and a flag football team.
