A number of modeling analyses were performed as a part of the design process through the Fall of 2002.
An extensive series of open water and icebreaking model tests were completed at SSPA in Sweden (open water) and Masa Arctic Research Center in Finland (icebreaking. Two bow configurations and three stern configurations were tested. Open water tests focused on ensuring the sea-keeping requirements for the Aids to Navigation (ATON) mission could be met as well as finalizing powering and maneuvering predictions. The icebreaking model tests focused on documenting the maneuvering capabilities of the cutter in ice and refining the hull form for backing in ice.
