Air Station Detroit Location

Air Station Detroit is located on Selfridge Air National Guard base in the Northern suburbs of Detroit, Michigan. The base is approximately 13 miles Northeast of the Detroit city limits, on the shores of Lake St. Clair, and a short drive to the open countryside. Michigan is a Sportsmen's paradise with boating, camping, a variety of hunting and year round fishing. The people in the surrounding communities are typical Midwesterners, friendly and courteous.

Driving directions or satellite views can be found on the following web sites: Google map, Yahoo map & After entering the base at the Main Gate (best choice) turn right immediately after passing the fence, onto  N. Perimeter road, and go approximately 1/2 mile. The next road on the left is Stables, turn left and you will be entering Air Station Detroit. If you enter the base from the West side at the Joy Gate (this gate is normally closed), turn left as soon as you enter the base on W. Perimeter road, and go North for nearly a mile. Turn right on Plattsburg. At the end of Plattsburg, turn left just before the 'Air Station Detroit' Sign.

Selfridge Air National Guard Base

The base population is composed of Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, and Coast Guard personnel from the Active, Reserve, and National Guard forces, along with the US Border Patrol.  The Selfridge unit commanders work jointly to ensure that your assignment here is rewarding and enjoyable.

There are three gates where you can enter Selfridge ANGB. On the North side of the base just below the intersection of William P. Rosso Hwy. and Jefferson Ave, the Main Gate is located on Jefferson Ave as it runs South into the base. (William P. Rosso Hwy. is a.k.a. M-59 or Hall rd. W. of Gratiot Ave. See map links above.) On The West side of the base is another entrance on Joy Ave as it runs East into the Base. This gate is normally closed.  On the South side of the base, off of North River Road is the golf gate. It is called the golf gate  because it is near the golf course and has limited access during the day.

Government housing is in the process of being closed down here at Selfridge and most people will be required to live on the economy. However. leased housing may be available if you meet certain requirements considered on a case by case basis. If you are interested in applying for leased housing, please call the Housing Officer at (586) 239-2921 to discuss your needs.

Air Station Detroit Operations

The Air Station is a busy one with a large OPAREA encompassing Lakes Ontario, Erie, St. Clair and southern Lake Huron. During the summer months we assume responsibility for the southeastern portion of Lake Michigan and operate an Air Facility located in Muskegon, Michigan; on the west side of the state.

We support and work with, 30 Coast Guard shore units, five cutters, as well as other federal, state, local, and Canadian government agencies. Detroit aircrews prosecute over 200 Search and Rescue cases and save more than 30 lives annually.

We have two distinct SAR seasons: Summer with the largest concentration of boaters per square mile in the world on our doorstep, plus the Muskegon Air Facility; and Winter with the popular ice fishing activities. From September to May, we also deploy Aviation Detachments to the Caribbean.
