Western Rivers (dw)
The Western Rivers Division oversees and advocates for the Western Rivers Sectors and sub-units highlighting the uniqueness of Coast Guard operations on the rivers. The Chief, Western Rivers Division serves as the subject matter expert for the riverine environment and serves a liaison role with the various maritime industry organizations by sitting on committees such as River Industry Executive Task Force and AWO-Regional Quality Steering Committee. Additionally, he assists with the planning of the annual Inland Waterways Conference in conjunction with the US Army Corps of Engineers.
The Western Rivers Bridge Administration Branch reports to the Chief, Western Rivers Division. The Bridge Administrative Branch is responsible for the administration of approximately 2,000 bridges along the Western Rivers. This includes permit approvals and studies per the Truman-Hobbs Act. The goals of the Bridge Administrative Branch include protecting the freedom of navigation and quality of the human environment. This goal promotes a balanced approach to all transportation needs thus meeting the reasonable needs of navigation and land transportation modes.
The Western and Eastern regions of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary report to the Chief, Western Rivers Division. The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary is the uniformed volunteer component of Team Coast Guard. Founded in 1939 by an Act of Congress as the U.S. Coast Guard Reserves, the organization was re-designated as the Auxiliary in 1941. The 30,000+ volunteer members (men and women) donate millions of hours in support of Coast Guard Missions.
